"How Old is Your Paperboy?"

My friend Leo Quinn recently told me a story about discovering that his "paperboy" was a 70 year old woman. He can tell the story (and it's IMPORTANT lesson), much better than I can and he told me I could share his email with you...

I can see my front sidewalk from the window in my home office. When I put up the shades I can usually see the two newspapers I get delivered laying on that sidewalk.

One comes in a clear bag and the other in an orange one. Wednesday was no different.

Shortly after I sat down to the computer I noticed a car stop in front of
the house. Out climbed a 70+ year old woman. Maybe she was 65+ I'm no good at guessing ages. She wasn't 40 or 50... I'm sure of that. She was carrying an orange bag.

There was already an orange bag on the sidewalk. She walked over to that...took out the paper to determine, I assume, if it was today's paper...it was... so she put it back in the orange bag and gave it a short toss. It was now only 10 feet from my porch. :>)

She looked at the house a couple times and smiled I suppose just in case someone had been watching and I so wish I'd been dressed (never you mind what time it was)
because I would have loved to have gone out and spoken to her.

Even writing this a day later remembering that whole scene makes me a little sad. I assume my papers are delivered well before I get up (never you mind what time).
I pay through the mail so I don't know anything about my carriers.

My hope is that her son or daughter or grandson is my paper "boy" and they
were at work or school when grandma got the call that somebody didn't get
their paper and she volunteered to deliver it.

It makes me feel better to think that so that is the story I'm sticking with.

And even if it is her route, maybe she doesn't need the money and does it because she enjoys the exercise and the extra spending money.

But what if not?

What if she delivers papers because she NEEDS the money? Despite a lifetime of hard work she still needs to work at a job with poor weather conditions a lot of the year here in Upstate NY.

Certainly there is NOTHING wrong with delivering papers. I did it in Jr. High.
A former local mayor of a medium-sized city delivered them in his job just BEFORE
he became mayor. You can believe his opponents had fun with that.

It is in fact a great way to earn money. You can be done early in the day...most pay by mail so there is no collecting...which I never cared for myself...it's really pretty good.

TIP: If you get a route in November and give it up in January you'll get all the
Christmas tips!

My point in telling you this story is to remind your WHY you want to carefully manage your money no matter what your age.

You have many choices to learn how to do that better. Certainly my "How To Own
Your Paycheck Again!" program is one option but no matter what you decide to do I
simply want you to do SOMETHING.

I heard an analogy recently about teeth. It was something like "you either pay attention to your teeth when you are young or you pay attention to them when you are old." (PAIN)

Same goes for your money. Hiding from your finances is the worst thing you can do.

Everything that is watched improves. Think about it. It's true. Children
are a great example. They aren't shooting spitballs while adults are watching!

Carefully track your financial situation.

No matter if you are 8 or 80...it's never to early or too late to start.
